Jorge Cham is a dude

Jorge Cham, the guy behind the awesome Piled Higher and Deeper, was at QUT last Thursday. He spoke on “The Power of Procrastination” which was Jorge’s way of saying that it’s OK if you feel overwhelmed sometimes.

He also made the point that if you’re procrastinating, rather than doing your research, perhaps you don’t want to be doing your research. (This is actually pretty deep, and I think I’ll write more about that later.)

The best line of the night was when he was talking about the sort of emails he receives. Apparently he gets quite a few along the lines of “Ceclia is so hot. Can I marry her”. His reply is “No. First, she’s imanginary. And second, she’s my imaginary girlfriend, get your own”.

Jorge was also asked about his actual research which is to do with, as I understand it, semi-autonomous robots that walk like cockroaches. Someone asked what had happend to the robots he made for his PhD. Jorge said that they were sitting on a shelf in his old lab, gathering cobwebs. There was apparently some talk of them being made into toys. But even that was not practical. Sigh.

Oh, and why is he a dude? Because he drew me an awesome Mike off the cuff when I pre-ordered a book. Thanks, Jorge!
